With the approval of the Office of the Communications Authority of Hong Kong, the operator China Mobile Hong Kong has officially decommissioned and shut down its 2G network.
Prior to this, on September 30, 2021, Hutchison Telephone withdrew from the 2G network, followed by SmarTone on October 14, 2022, and HKT on November 8, 2024. Over the past two years, China Mobile Hong Kong had been the sole remaining 2G operator. With China Mobile Hong Kong's exit, the 2G network has now completely disappeared from Hong Kong.
All three of China's largest telecom operators provide services in Hong Kong, but only China Mobile Hong Kong owns its own base stations. China Unicom and China Telecom operate as Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), leasing network capacity from local Hong Kong carriers.
As for 3G, China Mobile Hong Kong moved the fastest, officially shutting down its 3G services on June 30, 2025. Consequently, China Unicom and China Telecom, which leased these mobile networks, also lost their 3G capabilities.
Hutchison, SmarTone, and HKT are also progressively phasing out their 3G spectrum and services. Currently, they retain only a few 3G base stations in remote outskirts and outlying islands, while coverage in urban areas has been completely eliminated.
